In 2019 our farm initiated its Pollinator Protection Project and has dedicated part of our land to become a certified Pollinator Waystation for migrating Monarch butterflies and local Pollinators with MonarchWatch.org
During the Summer we raise and release monarch butterflies to help the migrating population survive.
From 1999 to 2019 the migrating population of monarch butterflies has decreased from an estimated 1.2 million to fewer then 29,000. If that trend continues it is feared that monarchs will be extinct within another 2 decades.
To do our part, Midnight Rose Farm has dedicated part of our lands as a dedicated pollinator feeding area- we use No pesticides or harsh fertilizers, and actively cultivate common milkweed and butterfly weed patches throughout the farm.
Our fields are not cut during pollinator growth and migration season so they provide much needed food and shelter as their life cycle begins and ends.
During our butterfly season the hatchery takes between 1-3 hours a day to care for, clean, and feed the various stages of our butterflies. You will often see us out gathering milkweed for caterpillars and looking for eggs that our traveling "momma" monarchs leave for us!
We do offer educational programs and are always available to answer any questions that you may have on what you can do to help our Pollinator friends!
From June through September we offer the unique experience to our guests to participate in a butterfly release as we send our "winged guests" on their journey to Mexico. Due to releases being at the whim of nature we can often not preplan a release for your visit to the farm but we will keep updates on our social media as to when and where we will be releasing.
Releases are free in 2021 but donations to the pollinator project are always welcomed as it helps us cultivate better fields and update our hatchery.
If you are interested in participating in a butterfly release please let us know prior to your visit and we will try to accommodate.
The farm's fields are a great place for nature photography as many of our releases stay close by for a week or more.
In 2020 we raised and released 202 monarch butterflies
Change starts with the understanding of "why" the change is needed. Owning and operating Midnight Rose Farm gives Jeff and Jacqui new and wonderful experiences every day- we are happy to share all the we have learned over the last nearly 20 years with you!
From our pollinator project, to daily farm life and responsible animal care, if you have any questions please let us know. Tours of the flower fields, conservancy land, or our poultry operation can be arranged with Jacqui.
One of our top priorities is Supporting Local- our area is bursting with local food producers, wineries, and crafting creators. We offer a variety of locally produced products to our guests at Monarch House as well as contact information to purchasing from each of them.
We have a driving map of the area wineries, and can recommend several local tour services for your group.
Our Farm store is open select weekends and we host our Homemade Market days on 2 Saturdays during the growing season- check our Facebook and Instagram accounts for dates.
